you are my friend

I sometimes feel uncomfortable about claiming someone as my friend; what if I have been imagining it? What if it’s not reciprocated? What if I’m an acquaintance or stranger to them?

Then I publicly say something like “someone I know” or something vague like that, but I really need to get a grip.

There is no person on earth probably, or at least not in my circle, that would feel offended about being called a friend. Especially by me. I am doing our connection a disservice by not claiming it. We are friends. I’ve known you for years. You wanna play games with me and meet me. You invite me to things. You’ll attend my wedding.

I would do everyone a massive disservice if I still pretended that’s not a friend out of a false sense of shame or humility. I just had to imagine someone who sees me as a friend see me claim they’re just someone I know or someone else’s friend, and them being disappointed and withdrawing from me. That’s not what I want at all. So I’d rather risk someone (against all odds) going “Ew we aren’t friends” than hurt a friend by not claiming them.

I am working on it!!
