therapyspeak
I hate listening to therapyspeak and very granular mental health slang concepts within normal friend group talks. People used to say things like “Should I stop being friends with that person? I would feel better if I did that” but the same thing is now “If I did that would that be ghosting? Would I be gaslighting them? I would feel empowered if I did that. I wanna protect my energy and that person is such an energy vampire. That person is so narcissistic and I am tired of doing emotional labour when they triangulate me and project onto me…” oh my god shut up I can’t stand it anymore please.
These concepts and words weren’t made for casual conversation by laymen and it sounds extremely weird and most of the time applies it wrong. It also feels disingenuous and performative, like you’re intellectualizing very basic life stuff that is not worth the therapyspeak. It’s not deep, it’s not multilayered, severe, traumatic. Why can’t you talk like an average person about your feelings? I went to therapy for years and years and don’t talk like this. It’s not therapy that does it. You don’t need to speak like that to understand yourself and learn positive coping mechanisms. What is it supposed to convey? You sound like a first year psychology student (in a negative way, like you’re trying to diagnose everyone and pathologize everything).
Why can’t you just be mad right now, why does it have to be “so BPD”? Why can’t you be sad about a rejection without immediately calling it rejection sensitive dysphoria? Why does everything you do and feel have to be split up between diagnoses you may or may not have? Why do you think you’re made up of diagnoses, don’t you realize how harmful that is? And why is there a need for you to label what is and isn’t your true self - with or without meds?
