the crushing machine
We have people who understand that society needs that service, so they sacrifice their life, their free-time, their health, a work-life balance, and the ability to earn more just to be our nurses, doctors, EMTs, firefighters and the like.
Meanwhile we also have people sitting in an office, most of their projects being coding useless or unethical shit, and if you ask them to reconsider working for asshole companies like MS, Google, Palantir etc. and smaller equivalents, they say “well we all have to work” “I have no choice” “I have to earn my money somehow”. You can’t even ask them to make the slightest sacrifice.
They wouldn’t even have to give up most of what other essential job employees have to give up. They’d just earn a little less and lose the brag of working at FAANG. That’s all.
I think these people never think about the fact that there are tons of others who willingly, knowingly decide for a career while being aware that it will always pay peanuts and demand their life be structured around the job, and doing it anyway.
In their mind, everyone is always just maximizing their own gain, so not working somewhere very unethical is just shooting yourself in the foot. Because working for the baddies always pays best, and you wanna be one of the cogs of the power, so you’re not the one being crushed by it. You willingly help run the crushing machine so you’re safe.
