paths are closing
I’m at my first milestone where some paths are inevitably closing.
Oh wait, maybe the second. I think there are some paths that close when you don’t persistently train as a young child and have no supportive parents. For example, I will never be a child prodigy. I will also never be one of those teens that already have a startup.
Okay, so the second. That one means a bit more to me.
Can I technically study whatever I want when I want? Sure, and I want to until I physically can’t. But what I study at 35-60 won’t be my career anymore, most likely. I’ve locked myself in somewhat. I won’t be any of the things I wondered about pursuing growing up, but something else entirely. No epigeneticist.
I have also passed the point of being a hypereducated young person; you know, the kind already having a Master’s at 25 or something, and/or a double Bachelor’s degree, and other stuff. I’m late. Not too late, but late. I can’t be 35 with a doctorate. I just found out doctorate and PhD are not entirely the same thing, good to know.
People wanna see very young impressive people get scholarships, not crusty 30 year olds who should manage it all themselves via a fulltime job, next to disability (or for others: next to family). They are considered to have built something up already, even if that’s less and less true.
I won’t be impressive, I will just be normal. The older I get, the more the qualifications I have will just be expected and average.
I assume the next, third point will be an age where I will no longer get any sort of education, cert, degree for my career anymore, just for fun, or not at all. That doesn’t mean I stay dumb from then on and never grow, just that aside from seminars and conferences here and there, that will be it.
That will also close the door on a doctorate. Do I even wanna do one? Could I do one? I don’t know yet. I won’t apply pressure to decide yet. I need to do my Bachelor’s and Master’s still.
