it's gonna hit your loved ones
A lot of people want change, and we can agree on a lot of things; but I think realistically, they aren't ready for how much it will hit their loved ones. This aspect is, I assume, one of the top factors that things remain the same. People value blood and connection over justice and morals. They can't imagine their loved ones doing anything wrong, or being complicit in the very same systems they hate. Others who do this are evil, but their friend is just "doing their job".
If you want affordable rents and stopping landlords from bleeding us all dry over greed, it will also hit your family member that is one. He might be nice to you, but what you don't know is that he raised rent over 200% for the last couple years, refuses to fix the mold problem, and is harassing his tenants. You can't imagine him doing that, and you'll likely never find out if he does. But if there would be genuine changes that make such landlord behavior impossible, you better believe he would beg and cry, complain he is one of the good ones that just wants to give people a home but now thanks to the evil government, he'll think twice about offering his property to other people, because it's now sooo hard and such a liability for him! This happens every time the government gets involved, like capping rents or being court-ordered to repair something or saying that refusing to rent out to Muslims is illegal.
The same thing will happen at work - wanna remove bullshit jobs, get a good salary, good benefits, insurance and a work/life balance? Wanna significantly reduce the pay for CEOs? Better believe your other family member will complain, whether she is some CEO or just some middle manager. People like her would be eliminated, or people like her would get a paycut, or they would be forced to accept that you cannot harass people after work hours and that they don't owe you their entire life just for being employed. Babe, the annoying ass, smug ass, 7-rounds-of-interviews ass people all have loved ones who love their shit! They're their nibling, their sweet neighbor, their weekend trainer of their son or whatever, but they are, also, the asshole that doesn't refuse to participate in the sheer stupidity of most application processes nowadays, but even plays into it, like they're having some sort of sick pleasure in setting up Saw-esque tasks and watching the applicants fumble.
The people working at the worst scammy banks you know have friends, the people working at unethical law firms have families, the people working at Lockheed Martin et. al. are sweet people in private, the people in US health insurance companies think they're doing a good job denying your claim and go home to be kissed on the forehead for it. Normal people everywhere are involved in these cogs that kill so many of us and crush our dreams, and but if you want anything to change, you have to recognize and accept that the ones YOU like are involved too, and they will be big sad by the changes you want or even lose everything over it. And you shouldn't be afraid of that or try to protect them. Making the world a worse place was an opportunity of income for them and they gladly took it; it's their own fault, and after adjusting, they will be fine. Literally NO ONE has to be or remain a villain. We'd be closer to at least a crumb of utopia if you all held your loved ones accountable, and I don't mean some below minimum wage chump working for Chiquita, but actual people in power or who have the power to work a lot of other jobs that are notably less bad.
